Guidelines for disinfecting your home after Covid-19 home recovery

The daily number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Singapore has continued to remain at a high level. The government announced that confirmed patients can choose to self-isolate at home if they have no severe symptoms and have a suitable isolation environment. However, experts have found that the COVID-19 virus may stay on the surface for a couple of days. So after we recover from the COVID-19 at our home, the objects we touched during self-isolation, such as bedsheets, toilets, desks, wardrobes, etc., will have residual virus lingering on the surface.

After we have finished our self-isolate and recovered, we should thoroughly clean and sanitize our living space. Here are some tips on how to disinfect your home after the covid-19 home recovery.

1. Keep your room ventilated for a few hours

Before the cleaning, we need to leave the room ventilated and air circulation by opening the window and switching on the fan for at least 3 hours.

2. Prepare complete cleaning tools and supplies

Prepare masks, disinfectant cleaners, disposable gloves, disinfectant wipes, disposable cleaning cloth, and mop. We need to wear PPE (personal protective equipment) to avoid the virus accidentally getting on us during cleaning.

3. Wash the bedsheet and blanket

Remove the bedsheets, pillowcases, mattress protectors, and quilt. Put them into the washing machine and wash gently. Add disinfectant and laundry detergent before washing. If your room has curtains, you need to remove the curtains and washed.

Spray your mattress with disinfectant spray before placing the new bedsheets.

4. Sanitize the surfaces

Wear disposable gloves and wipe down all furniture surfaces with disinfectant wipes. For example, switches, tables, doorknobs, chairs, windows, skincare products and so on that we often touch. Then use a clean cloth soaked with disinfectant for a second wipe.

5. Clean the toilet

If your toilet is shared, then you need to clean it thoroughly. Mix the disinfectant with the cleaning solution and scrub the floor with the solution and brush. Apply the mixture on the surface of the bathroom sink and water tap, use a sponge to clean thoroughly. For the toilet bowl, we recommend pouring the mixture into the toilet bowl and brushing it with a toilet brush, then flushing it. Remember to sanitize the flush bottom after flushing. At last, use the disinfectant spray to spray in the air.

6. Remove all the PPE and dispose of the waste

dispose trash

Remove all the PPE and put all the garbage into the garbage bag. Tie it tightly with a rope to avoid garbage leakage. Trash needs to be discarded immediately and cannot be kept in the room. After safely disposing of the trash, you need to wash your hands with soap.

The above tips are the compulsory disinfection and cleaning works that need to be carried out after home isolation to prevent your virus from spreading to your beloved family and friends.
